Night watch movie review

OK, so I went into this movie not really knowing what to expect (I knew that it was Russian and it dealt with Vampires and it was getting a fair amount of critical acclaim) So Scotty Ho and I went to see it.
Now if the Vampire movie Genre is your cup of tea; ie if you liked Blade, Underworld, Interview witha vampire, and all the resultant sequels, you owe it to yourself to see this movie. That being said, the movie wasn't a huge groundbreaker for me (though it's assumable that I am not a rabid fan of the Genre) I liked the twist put on the Vampire culture in the Film and the good guys do have perhaps the only truck awesomer than the one alexi and I fantasized about. The Film takes it somewhat unique vision of the modern vampire society and superimposes it upon a Matrix like "the one" sort of setup. This is the first of a trilogy in which the final battle between good and evil is nigh (that's a concept that generally sells... see Starwars, Lotr, the matrix, Willow)
Overall I'll give the movie a B, it kept me interested, the main character is generally likeable, not your typical asskicker (in fact he doesn't kick much ass) with a dark past that comes back to haunt him (by haunt I mean sodomize with a hot barbed rusty metal shaft of Satan, figuratively of course) The fight scenes are done with that quick cut "I have no idea what's going on, who's winning" sorta style that seems all the rage, the end fight scene is positively incomprehensible. I don't remember the music at all so that's a neatral or negative grade there. There isn't much in the way of Character progression and there are a couple characters who are cool but don't add anything to this movie (I surmise they will play bigger roles in the sequel, but presumably the point of the first movie is to make me want to see the sequel and having cool characters that don't do much doesn't really highten my desire to fork over $9 for the sequel) In the end some loose ends get tied up way too conviently (I still have no idea the reasoning for why the lights come back on) and the movie ends on a very ambiguous note. Despite the flaws (some of which are nitpicky) I would probably drop the nine bucks to see the sequel, the movie had a cool style and enough of an interesting interpretation of what is now a film genre mainstay that it's worth checking out, Geeks will dig this movie, fans of the Genre will probably rave about this movie, for those not in the above two catagories, it's a decent action flick with some interesting moral ramblings, you might like it. Like I said: B
